From a fledgling startup in 2019 to a nationally recognised energy-focused digital agency. Here's how we got here.
Eight years. One mission. Powering growth in the UK energy sector.
The Beginning
Stonechat Digital Limited was formed in March 2019. By August we landed our first client — TheEnergyShop.com. A legacy price comparison pioneer with its best days behind it. We took on everything: SEO, content, web design, development, customer service and business development. The start of being a fully-integrated energy solutions business.

Survival Mode
Covid-19
Within six months of landing our first client, Covid-19 hit. As new business owners this was terrifying — a small, mainly self-funded team with no idea what lay ahead. We took what financial support we could and, like many others, we cracked on.
The Energy Crisis
We hit our first six-figure year — then in September, wholesale gas prices shot up. Within 5 months, 26 energy suppliers went bust affecting over 4,000,000 customers. Overnight, the domestic switching market died and so did our revenues. This was the hardest moment we'd faced. We genuinely thought the business would collapse.

Backs Against the Wall
Diversify or Die
With our backs against the wall we flipped the business away from a pure energy play — working with fashion jewellery, US ecommerce and sports betting clients. We also took on full-time employment to hedge our bets. Working 12-hour days was an absolute minimum. We did everything we could to survive.
Light at the End
We had somehow survived the storm. The team was intact and the business was growing. Revenues approached £500,000 and it felt like there was finally light at the end of the tunnel. We were managing e-commerce websites, interviewing sporting celebrities and doing whatever our clients needed us to do.

Energy-Only Decision
Back to Our Roots
The UK domestic energy market returned. Despite still serving non-energy clients, we made the decision to only actively take on new clients in the energy sector. Energy is what we know and we felt we had a unique proposition to stand out in a saturated agency landscape.
DDPP Framework
The business really started to take shape. We diversified across four distinct pillars — Digital, Data, Partners and Platforms. Our data was powering third-party websites. Our partners were enabling clients to reach new audiences. We were building bespoke platforms for some of the UK's largest brands. We were back on track...but still named after a bird. Time for a rebrand.

Grid53 is Born
The Rebrand
We started the year with a clean sweep of client renewals and added two more in Q1. We rebranded to trade as Grid53 — keeping our roots as Stonechat Digital Limited. For those wondering, the 53 relates to our latitude based on the Wirral. The team is growing, new clients are coming on board, and we are excited about the future.
